Materials we use
New pressure-treated softwood sleepers (longest life, most cost-effective), reclaimed hardwood railway sleepers (character look, heavier). Steel H-posts or galvanised fixing rods for structural runs. Concrete C25 strip foundations. Free-draining 20mm angular aggregate + non-woven geotextile behind the wall.
Our methods
Foundation excavated to below frost line, poured and cured before any timber goes on. Steel posts or fixing rods set into the wet concrete on a string line. Sleepers cut to length, drilled and bolted or pinned in staggered courses so joints don't stack. Drainage aggregate laid behind the wall in lifts as the wall goes up, wrapped in geotextile. Topsoil backfilled to finished grade.
Where it applies
Sleeper walls are the right call where a natural, chunky, timber look is wanted and where the structural load can be handled by timber + steel posts. For very tall retaining runs (over 1.2m), we may recommend a reinforced concrete or block core with a sleeper facing.
